I've been wanting to pull in and try this place forever, I finally did. It's great. I got the sliced pit Beef with coleslaw. It's sliced really thin and piled high. Great choice. Hubs got the sampler it's 3 slider size buns. He picked pulled pork and beef bbq and jerk chicken he loved all 3. Our sides were kale and mac and cheese both sides great. I think a lot of people don't know the BBQ place is there and it always throws me off because it's not really busy but I promise the food is great. Servings are big and prices super reasonable.

First rate! I travel up and down the east coast and haven't found a place that equals Smokey Joe's. I eat here at least once a week and they are consistently the best. The pork never has gristle, the sauce is top notch, and the ribs are always melt-in-your-mouth good. Other places are good - this place is great!

Had the Pit Pulled Pork, with coleslaw on top, and a side of kale! Topped with Jerk BBQ sauce myself. Full deep rich flavor much missed as I live on the Left Coast. Visiting from California, the staff was very friendly. Would recommend this quaint little place!

This place is small and is not capable is accommodating large groups or a "rush" of people coming at once. I noticed immediately that there were only two workers working the shift, but one of them seems dominate while the other one offers no service to the restaurant at all. It slowed down the service completely as I had to wait for the person who grilled to take my order. Once I ordered, I was disappointed at the fact that they had run out of chicken and would take an hour to fire it up. I guess it happens at most places where they run out of certain items, so fine I got half a rack of Baby Back's instead with a cup of chili. The guy said it would be around 5 minutes, honestly ended up waiting like 15 minutes for the food -- should have just got the chicken.. The chili was very meaty, as promised from the name of it. Haha, very delicious and filling. The Baby Back was honestly nothing special.. It just felt like meat drenched in BBQ sauce. Very disappointing but huge portions.

I've been meaning to stop by this place for a long time, so today was the day. After spending almost 8 years in Texas, I got used to BBQ a certain way, and was hoping that this would just be somewhat close to that. Unfortunately, it was not. Let's start with the staff. They were very friendly and helpful. If it was based upon that alone, I would come back again for a meal. Unfortunately, it wasn't, and I doubt I would. But at least the staff was nice. I initially ordered some Pork ribs. Was told that they didn't have any, and would be at least an hour before they did. This was at 1200 in the afternoon on a weekday. I understand things happen, but probably your top seller being out at lunchtime.... Weird, but ok. The strange part was that they told me that there are some in the oven cooking. The oven??? I thought this was a pit BBQ not a conventional oven BBQ. OK, maybe it was just miscommunication on my part, who knows. But when I look for real BBQ, I expect it to come from an open pit, or a smoker of some sort, not an oven. But I digress.... I ended up ordering a pit beef sandwich with baked beans and red potato salad. Now call me strange, but I actually like my "brisket" warm when I get it. This was not the case. The thinly sliced meat was cold on the bun. Not quite what I was expecting. I asked for brisket and ended up getting roast beef. Not quite the same. Maybe their definition of brisket is different here than in Texas. Either way, it really had no flavor, maybe because there was no bark on it like a good brisket should have. Now on to the beans. That stuff came straight out of a can!!! Seriously, try doing something with it.... Add some sauce, or bacon or onions, or something. But that stuff was straight up, untouched canned from the store. Not good !!! Finally, the red potato salad.... It was OK. Nothing special. It kind of lacked any discernible flavor, and ended up being rather bland. Was really hoping for some good old red potato salad. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. Overall, I do not foresee going back there to eat. The food really wasn't that good. Wish I could have tried the ribs though........

I used them for catering an event, so this is a different service from the normal restaurant. You can get the normal restaurant food for a catered event, but we ordered off a different menu. Despite discussing my menu choices with the catering manager before the tasting, we didn't get to taste the exact dishes we were hoping to serve to our guests, we just tasted whatever they had in the kitchen that afternoon. The catering manager was late, but she was very friendly, helpful, and creative about what we should feed guests with food allergies. Prices were reasonable, and their disposable dinnerware was as high quality as disposable dishes get. The day of the event, the catering manager didn't show. She sent 2 employees, which was not enough to bus the tables for our event. They also brought sweet tea (incorrect) and didn't put out salt and pepper. They didn't pick up any dishes, so I (this was my WEDDING RECEPTION!) was stuck picking up guests dishes with my mom. The employees were very sweet and seemed capable but they spent their time chatting. People loved the food (I just ate a salad because I'm a vegan.. they were kind enough to make a special salad for me, but I can't comment on the food really). We followed up with the catering manager and she was kind enough to refund us some of the cost since we had a negative experience. She was also very open to feedback, so even though we didn't have a great time, I think she knows the things that can be improved in the future.

I've tried many of the things they offer, and their standard pulled pork barbecue is pretty great. Their barbecue sauce is really (seriously) top-notch, and the service is always friendly and quick. If you do carry-out, call ahead, and it's never cold when you get home. Definitely get the potato salad, and their fries are pretty good, too. If you're not sure about the menu, the staff have their favorites, and great suggestions and information. I give the guys 5 stars, because they're a great little local joint in a sea of terrible chain restaurants, and they've survived. Definitely take the food home. Why? *They don't serve alcohol. *The seating is kind of sparse, and the road it's on is traffic-heavy - not really ideal for sitting outside.

Ate lunch here on September 28 with two other family members, including a child. The five-star rating is focused on my own wonderful experience with their PIT BEEF, which can be hard to find and hard to find done right. The pit beef is great! The other members in our party enjoyed their pulled pork and mac-n-cheese, respectively. The service is walk up, and friendly.

Not quite as good as hometown Kansas City BBQ but pretty good. It is very fast and relatively inexpensive. Can't decide? I like the sampler plate that gives you 3 little sandwiches where you choose from chicken salad, different BBQ, or jerk chicken. Large portions will leave you full. We can get two sampler platters and feed both adults and two kids. I like it a little better than Bear Creek in nearby Leonardtown. Good for a quick lunch break off NAS Patuxent River.

Mmm! Best chicken salad (yes! chicken salad!) sandwich - the pulled pork bbq is delicious too! I wasnt too much a fan of the bbq beef - but probably someone who likes really beefy tasting things would enjoy it. The sides weren't anything to write home about (I've tried the cole slaw, mac n cheese, potato salad and macaroni salad). I love the hot bbq sauce they have on their condiment bar and you gotta squeeze around people to get to the condiments and drinks. Small place for seating inside (during cold months)- if it's a sunny day you'll have to fight for the one table thats not blinded by the sun. There's outside seating too. Gets busy during lunch. Quick service. I know its a bbq joint and all - but seriously, try the chicken salad.

$8.43 for Sampler platter with side and drink. Pretty good BBQ but not great BBQ. Found this place with visiting NAS Patuxent River hoping for some quality BBQ. What I got was a mixed bag. I have eaten there three times now and would not consider this to be someplace where I go out of my way for (sorry about the grammar). The sampler plate offered three selections of BBQ (your choice) but all of the flavor seemed to come from the sauce and the smokey goodness I expect from BBQ was totally absent. Would I visit there again? It depends. Were I close and hungry I'd stop by but would not go too far out of my way to do so.

Excellent BBQ (not that I'm a seasoned BBQ person). Quick, friendly service. The staff will let you sample the food before you commit to buying. Love that. Then you're not stuck with something you dislike.

SKIP MISSION BBQ. Smokey Joe's is way better, and easier on your wallet. Had the pulled pork, and it was so good it didn't need sauce. Slaw and baked beans were pretty good also. Haven't had the brisket, yet. Small & local, what a BBQ place should be.

Great BBQ, great value, and kid friendly prices. Would like to see a little more variety to menu though.

Great bbq spot just off the road. Staff were very friendly and service was quick. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and onion rings. The pulled pork as piled very high and was ultra tender. Couldn't have been better. The roll was very soft so I didn't feel like I was eating too much extras as I want a mouthful of pork, not thick bread. Onion rings were packaged frozen kind deep fried to a great crisp. Were not hand battered, but a good side. I'd highly recommend the hot bbq sauce as it wasn't overpowering, but had a great spice kick and slightly tangier than the regular bbq sauce. They also had jerk bbq sauce which was very spicy. Some national and local hot sauces were for sale near the counter. Overall a fabulous pit bbq restaurant.

Nice place people are very pleasant but overall the food was just okay, I was hoping for a more full flavored BBQ it just didn't happen, the good was how ever tender, hot and fresh.

Love this place. Great service and good food with daily specials. Try the sampler and the kale.

Smokey Joe's is hands-down the best BBQ in the area. It crushes Bear Creek and Mission. Try their North Carolina pulled pork with their hot BBQ sauce. Also, don't sleep on their daily specials. Watch the white board for their cubans and open-face roast beef on Texas toast. Pretty incredible.

Although I do like their pulled pork- they surprisingly have one of the best fish fry's around. Every now and then they have the "Big Fish", a huge portion of beer battered haddock that reminds me of the Friday night fish fry's I would get back home. Look for it on the specials board, since it is not part of their regular menu. The batter is crispy and not overpowering...the fish is firm, flakes well, and is about 3/4" thick.

Quick, friendly service and an amazing pulled pork sandwich. The place is very clean, well lit, and smells utterly delicious. My stomach was growling upon entry and was quickly satisfied.
